HANTAVIRUS PULMONARY SYNDROME IN CANADA, 1989-1999 Introduction

چکیده

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) was first described in 1993 in the southwestern United States. HPS is a respiratory illness associated with the inhalation of aerosolized rodent excreta (urine and feces) contaminated by hantavirus particles. Four hantavirus species have been implicated as etiological agents of HPS in North America. One species, Sin Nombre virus, has been associated with the largest proportion of HPS cases. Its primary reservoir is the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus. Person-to-person transmission of HPS has not been documented in North America.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Panama: identification of novel hantaviruses and their likely reservoirs.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory disease with high mortality caused by rodent-borne hantaviruses, has previously been identified in the United States and Canada as well as central and southern South America. In late 1999 and early 2000, an outbreak of acute illness compatible with HPS was reported in Los Santos, Panama, with the death of 3 of the 12 (25%) suspected case...

Acute Sin Nombre hantavirus infection without pulmonary syndrome, United States.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) occurs in most infections with Sin Nombre virus and other North American hantaviruses. We report five cases of acute hantavirus infection that did not fit the HPS case definition. The patients had characteristic prodromal symptoms without severe pulmonary involvement. These cases suggest that surveillance for HPS may need to be expanded.

Comment on “A Cluster of Three Cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome among Canadian Military Personnel”

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare illness in eastern Canada. We present three cases of HPS among military personnel in Quebec. The three cases shared a common exposure to mouse excreta while engaged in military training in Alberta, a western province of Canada.

New York 1 and Sin Nombre viruses are serotypically distinct viruses associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

New York 1 virus (NY-1) and Sin Nombre virus (SN) are associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). NY-1 and SN are derived from unique mammalian hosts and geographic locations but have similar G1 and G2 surface proteins (93 and 97% identical, respectively). Focus reduction neutralization assays were used to define the serotypic relationship between NY-1 and SN. Sera from NY-1-positive P...

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome associated with Monongahela virus, Pennsylvania.

The first two recognized cases of rapidly fatal hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Pennsylvania occurred within an 8-month period in 1997. Illness in the two patients was confirmed by immunohistochemical techniques on autopsy material. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis of tissue from one patient and environmentally associated Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mouse) identif...
